WORKSHEET + VIDEO

This is a challenging word problem. The audience for this worksheet includes: gifted, homeschool, and students who need enrichment activities. Also suitable for homework & flipped classrooms (we have an accompanying video).

In this practice problem, we’ll solve a common type of problem in Algebra. This involves an inequality where you see a greater-than or less-than sign ( ❭ or ❬ ), as opposed to an equation that uses an equals sign (=). One big difference between solving equations and solving inequalities is that your answer will include a range of values, instead of having just one answer. This problem uses the addition property of inequalities. This says you can add (or subtract) the same value to both sides of an inequality without changing it.

We're learning ALGEBRA at Socratica High, by solving real world problems. This problem is referencing Mary Anning, a real live person from England known for fossil hunting in the 1800s. She found the first ichthyosaur skeleton when she was 12. We work the whole problem, step by step, in this video.

You don't have to be afraid of word problems in math class anymore, because we're going to solve them with you. We'll show you how to translate the sentences in math word problems into "math language." Each sentence becomes an equation. You'll identify your "knowns" and "unknowns," and pretty soon, with practice, you'll feel comfortable solving these kinds of problems on your own.
